Pierce’s lapidary work started out as a fascination and then a hobby and now is becoming a larger part of his practice. Stones can truly feel like a magical material and the processing of them into cut wearable pieces is very fulfilling. He only works with ethically sourced rough that origins are known or are reclaimed. Pierce also will rockhound his own stones if possible like petrified wood from Arizona and agates from Kentucky creek beds. His next goal is to learn to facet once he can locate a machine for it.

This project is made from reclaimed petrified wood, box elder, and copper. It is a bit of a play on the differences between petrified wood and live-growth wood. While they both are wood and have grain they are entirely different and have different compositions and structures. The duality of materials is fascinating.
